In 1953 at Sidney Janis Gallery, he surprised the art world with these expressive paintings where women's expressions are strong and almost brutally painted. In addition to the direct estimation, filled with strength and color, Kooning's women's paintings show an inspiration of and profound knowledge of synthetic cubism. The women appear to be broken up and reassembled, and through layers of paint and overcoats, they have found their final form.
